Taking the advantege of living in this neighbourfood, I walked around and took the photos. Unlike the weather in Kyoto at this time of the year, it was very pleasant this year. The weather contributed to the crowd which amounted over 1 million people.

It was my first Gion Matsuri and I enjoyed it very much. This Koi (Carp) Yama is located near my place.

This is a miniature Koi Yama. Can you see little carp on top? Photo Top Home Here is your map This is a map of the Gion Matsuri Area. This is not a very centre of the City of Kyoto but rather an old downtown part. As you can see, each community has its own Hoko or Yama.
Photo Top Home Nothing special So long as you see this photo, it is just one of these ordinary and typical community based summer festivals in Japan. Photo Top Home
This is, in my opinion, a very unique about Gion Matsuri. Can you imagine what they are doing? They look in at family treasures of private houses. It is sort of conspicuous consumption of wealthy people in the community, which I found very interesting. I don't know how this was supported but those who come and enjoy the festival should share the cost of conservation. Photo Top Home
