Hakone Ekiden 2006, back to the goal
The Tokyo-Hakone Ofuku Daigaku Ekiden is a relay race among teams of male university students from Tokyo to the mountainous Hakone area and back. This is one of the most popular long-distance running events in Japan. The route runs from Otemachi, a Tokyo business district, to Lake Ashi in Hakone, and back, a total distance of 216.4 kilometers (136 miles). For 2007
They are competing against the last seat for the next years nomination. If you fail to finish within top 10, you have to get through the Yosen-kai (heat) at the year-end in order to be qulified for the Hakone Ekiden. This is allegedly really severe.
